FUN STUFF NEAR B/N UPDATED April 25th, 2011

People have the mental image before they get to Illinois that it is made up of Chicago and cornfields!

There are so may great places around Bloomington/Normal to see and have fun. I would like to dedicate this page to those places. Please e-mail me your favorite places that you would like to share with the rest of us.

Some of the places that I enjoy are described below along with web sites: CASTLE THEATRE, MILLER PARK ZOO, SUGAR GROVE NATURE CENTER, WELDON SPRINGS STATE PARK, STARVED ROCK STATE PARK and ALLERTON PARK.

MORE TO COME IN 2011! FIRST STOPS...BEACHY'S, BEEF HOUSE,  EITELJORG MUSEUM OF AMERICAN INDIAN AND WESTERN ART,

April 24th, 2011. The Beef House, Covington Indiana. Please
take the 1st Indiana exit at mile marker 4 off I-74..or you might end up turning around at the exit for Turkey Run State park like I did. :(  The Beef House is about half way to Indianapolis if you are going in that direction for the Indy 500 etc. The food at the Beef House is very good and never disappoints.

If you are going on a day trip in that direction I have found the zoo and botanical gardens very underwhelming compared to Chicago or St. Louis.

However: the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art is very unique. It is located next to the Indianapolis Zoo

A museum with John Wayne can't be all bad!

April 8th, 2011. First day trip this year was to Beachy's. I could say Arthur Illinois just as easy but.... Beachy's is the mental image of where I am going. It is a bulk food store patronized by the Amish and full of great stuff! Like one aisle dedicated to hard candy and another to spices.

This store is lit by skylights during the day and gas lamps when it gets dark. For me in a way I feel that this a lot like it must have been all over the U.S. in the early 1900's. My heartbeat slows and my blood pressure drops. You can drive around and stop at individual homesteads that have signs out front. We stopped this time at a nursery and got some plants and have in the past gotten fresh produce, eggs, and handcrafted items. We drove past some pre-school Amish kids riding on their kid sized buggy pulled by a pony.

This may be the only Dollar General where the buggy's outnumber the cars! A great pace to eat is Yoder's on Rt 133 in Arthur. $7.95 buffet and I could not eat for the rest of the day after a late lunch. The fried chicken is excellent!!! Arthur and Beachy's is literally a hundred years away from B/N.

November 17 The Castle Theatre has recently gone through a 1.5 million dollar restoration to bring it back to its original splendor. It was originally built in 1916 as a 1000 seat theater.

It probably seats about 200 "ish" now and is set up with balcony seating, single seats near the stage and 8 seat tables farther back (first come, first served). It is located on Wahiington Street near Main across the street from PNC bank (Formerly known as National City).
The Theatre serves beer, wine and mixed drinks...no food nor can you bring in food. the night I was there the doors opened at 6:30 and the warm up band started at 7:30 with the main act at 8:15. A lot of the nights advertise as 21+. Most nights appear to be $10-15 a ticket. Website is www.thecastletheatre.com

November 18  Miller Park Zoo
Please don't over look Miller Park Zoo located off West Wood Street in Bloomington. This is a great little zoo. Best time to come is when the animals get fed starting with the Sea Lions and Otters at 3:00 and then the tiger, leopard and bear at 4:00 and on from there.

The park has a great rainforest exibit. So when you get tired of snow this winter come to the tropics for a break.
I also noticied that a lot of the local North American animals such as wolves and bobcats seem to be more animated now that the hot weather is over. So don't write off the zoo just because the weather is colder.

Jay Tetzloff ,the Miller Park Zoo Superintendent is the Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan Coordinator which is government speak for the man in charge of breeding Snow Leopards in Capitivity. Miller Park will be receiving a young male snow leopard in the spring of 2011 from Oklahoma City Zoo and a female snow leopard from the Granby Zoo in Canada via the Bronx Zoo. Since this leopard needs to be imported it may take a year or two. If this is not enough, Jay also manages the Tammar Wallaby(small kangaroo) Population Plan and studbook.
I had to throw in the goat from the children's petting zoo since he gave me such a great smile!

Oct 18, Sugar Grove Nature Center is a great place for kids of all ages!
I enjoy their Spring Plant Sale..It is a fundraiser for them and the prices are great for native plants. My Grand-daughter enjoys the fun activities and special events such as the tapping of the maple trees in late winter (February, March) for maple syrup.

You have a very short drive to Sugar Grove. Take I-55 or old Route 66 south to Funk's Grove. Take a right into Funk's Grove and follow the signs.

October 14th, 2010. Let's talk a little about  Weldon Springs State Park
which is located about 3 miles to the southeast of CLINTON, Illinois. Head south on US 51, use the bypass around Clinton and turn left at the third stoplight onto business 51. Take the first right onto Revere Road and follow the signs to Weldon Springs. Weldon Springs has been on a tight budget for years and was even half closed by a former Governer who shall not be mentioned. How do you half close a Park? Veteran's Point (seen below) was partially
funded by the Federal Government so the Park was open only to Veteran's Point. Otherwise he would have had to pay back Uncle the money they had contributed.

Site Supervisor Dave Herzog despite a tight budget has turned this park into a gem of a destination. There are camping sites, hiking trails, fishing, and many kid related activities. Two of my favorite trails are the 2 mile trail around the lake and the 1.5 mile prairie walk.

Early morning walks around the lake are great for wild life. If you squint real hard at the middle of the middle picture, you will see a crane. I have seen cranes, ducks, beaver, deer and other birds that I need a bird book to identify. The Prairie Trail is shown as moderate difficulty but that must be lawyer speak. In the High Sierra it would be a beginner bunny trail.

The one room schoolhouse is open Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend every Saturday and Sunday or whenever you can catch the building interpreter as I did Oct 15 am.

Unless you come on a busy holiday you should easily find a private spot large or small for your family and friends. Lots of slides, swings and climbing stuff for the kids. See if you can find the dead swamp cyprus tree that has been converted into a tribute of all the park critters, large and small.
ONE MORE THING...HOPEFULLY THE SLEDDING HILL WILL BE RE-OPENED THIS YEAR. iF AND WHEN  THAT HAPPENS I WILL LET YOU KNOW.

Jan 24th 2011: STARVED ROCK: Illinois has more Bald Eagles in winter than any other state except Alaska!
If you missed BALD EAGLE WATCH WEEKEND JAN 22-23RD at Starved Rock and Illinois Waterway Visitor Center all I can say is WOW!  It was great!! However the stars of the show will still be there for many weeks to come. PLEASE SEE PICTURES BELOW. On three trees on Plum Island there were at least 20-24 Bald Eagles at any one time. Add to this at least another dozen flying and diving down to the river for fish. Add to this even more farther down on Plum Island. The waterway visitor center probably gives you the best up close viewing of the eagles. We had just left the visitor center when one flew just a few feet in front of the upper terrace.                www.starvedrocklodge.com

THERE WERE 25+ EAGLES IN 3 TREES ON PLUM ISLAND.

OCT 12, Yesterday I spent the day at Starved Rock State Park  which is an hours drive north of B/N on I-39.  This park is has a lodge that was built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) during the Great Depression.

Being as we arrived on a Holiday, the main dining room had a wait time due to reservations. We ended up eating on the outside deck which had a more limited menu. After eating we walked off our lunch by hiking St. Louis Canyon.

Then we had to do the obligatory walk to the top of Starved Rock.
You can get a map of all the hiking trails at the sign in desk in the lobby of the Lodge. You would really have to try very hard to get lost since all the trails are marked and there are Mall type maps with "you are here" legends all over the place. Please take water with you since you will work up a thirst. There are also boat rides and canoe rentals and the Park is very "dog friendly". Another fun place to eat would be in Oglesby near the Park. This drive in was an A&W in its previous life but you can still get home made root beer in frosty mugs. Great treat after hiking all day!
Moore's Root Beer Stand comes complete with carhops and trays for your roll down window!

ALLERTON PARK

A one hour drive puts you in olde England complete with Manor House, formal gardens rolling lawns and 1500 acres with paths and huge statues (The Sunsinger being the largest).
The father of Robert Allerton made the family fortune during the Civil War providing food for the Union Armies and Robert helped spend that fortune by taking the "Grand Tour" of Europe and deciding to make a duplicate of the Hamm Manor House that he discovered in England in central Illinois. When he decided to move to Hawaii he donated the 1500 acre parklands and 10,000 farm acres to the U of I with the stipulation that the income of the farms be used for the maintenance of the home and grounds and that the property remain open to the general public. Great place for a picnic and walking the miles of trails.
If you don't want to make your own picnic lunch, I highly recomend the Brown Bag Restaurant in Monticello for some great "to go" food.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: HEAD TOWARDS CHAMPAIGN ON THE INTERSTATE OR 150 TURN SOUTH AT FARMER CITY TO DELAND TO MONTICELLO. ABOUT A 1 HOUR 20 MINUTE DRIVE.
